Keeping It Casual
Formal customer interviews are the enemy of honest signal. The moment someone knows they are being "interviewed" about a product idea, they shift into performance mode — saying what sounds smart, being encouraging to avoid awkwardness, and managing the interviewer's emotions rather than sharing truth. Fitzpatrick argues that the best customer conversations happen casually: at conferences, in Slack channels, during coffee chats, in online communities. You do not need a 45-minute scheduled session. A 5-minute casual conversation that follows the Mom Test rules produces more reliable signal than an hour of formal interviewing. The goal is to make learning a continuous, low-friction activity embedded in your daily life — not a scheduled research event.

How It Works
- Formality triggers performance. When someone sits across a table from you with a notepad, they become self-conscious about their answers. When you chat at a meetup, they speak naturally
- You do not need to disclose that you are doing customer development. "I am curious about how you handle X" is a perfectly natural conversation starter that follows all the Mom Test rules
- The 5-minute conversation: most of what you need to learn can be extracted in a short, focused exchange. You do not need a full interview if you know your three important questions
- Engineering casual encounters: attend events where your target customers gather, join their online communities (Slack, Discord, Reddit, forums), participate in industry discussions, go to conferences
- The conversation does not start with "I am building something and want your feedback." It starts with "I am trying to understand how people deal with X" or even just asking a genuine question about their work
- Casual conversations also avoid the "interview fatigue" problem. You can have 3-5 casual conversations per week indefinitely, but you will burn out (and burn out your network) scheduling formal interviews at that rate
- Take notes immediately after, not during. Writing during a casual conversation makes it feel formal. Step away and record the key facts within 5 minutes
