Both/And Assumptions
Both/and assumptions represent the foundational mindset shift in the Paradox System — moving from the default either/or framing that the brain imposes under pressure to a both/and framing that opens creative space for integration. Smith and Lewis argue that assumptions are not neutral cognitive filters; they actively construct what we see as possible. When you assume a tension is an either/or choice, you literally cannot see integration options because your framing excludes them. Shifting assumptions is not positive thinking or wishful optimism — it is a deliberate cognitive reframe that changes the solution space you are working within.

How It Works
- Either/or as cognitive default — The brain defaults to binary categorization under pressure because it is faster and less cognitively expensive. Either/or thinking is not a character flaw; it is an energy-conservation strategy that becomes maladaptive when applied to paradoxes.
- Scarcity vs. abundance framing — Either/or thinking assumes a fixed pie: more innovation means less stability, more focus on me means less focus on the team. Both/and thinking assumes an expandable pie: investing in innovation can enhance stability, developing yourself can better serve the team.
- The reframing technique — When you catch yourself in either/or language ("We can either invest in growth or focus on profitability"), deliberately restate with both/and language ("How might investing in growth also improve profitability? How might focusing on profitability fund growth?").
- Paradoxical inquiry — Ask questions that hold both poles simultaneously: "What would it look like if both were true? What would someone who excels at both do? When have we seen both poles coexist successfully?"
- Cognitive complexity — Research shows that people with higher cognitive complexity (ability to hold multiple, contradictory ideas simultaneously) make better strategic decisions. Both/and assumptions are a trainable form of cognitive complexity.
