Asking Important Questions
Before every customer conversation, you must answer one question: "What are the three things I most need to learn?" If you do not know what you are trying to learn, the conversation is guaranteed to be a waste — you will default to pitching your idea and collecting compliments. Fitzpatrick defines an "important question" as one where the answer could change your behavior. If you would build the same thing regardless of the answer, the question is not important. The ultimate test: the **terrifying question** — the question you are most afraid to ask because the answer might kill your idea. That is always the most important question to ask first.

How It Works
  • Important questions have two properties: (1) the answer is currently unknown, and (2) the answer would change what you do next
  • "Would you use X?" fails both tests. You do not know the answer, but a "yes" will not change your behavior (you will build it regardless) and a "no" will not either (you will rationalize it away)
  • "How much time do you spend on this problem each week?" passes both tests. You do not know, and if the answer is "five minutes," you know the problem is not worth solving
  • The terrifying question test: if there is a question you are avoiding because the answer might invalidate your core assumption — that is the question you need to ask first. Every week you delay asking it is a week of building on an unvalidated assumption
  • Pre-conversation prep: write down your three most important questions. For each, write what you would do if the answer was bad. If "nothing changes," the question is not important enough
  • Important questions often feel awkward because they probe real pain, real money, and real behavior. "How much did you spend trying to fix this last year?" feels intrusive. But it is the question that matters
  • Avoid "zombie questions" — questions that feel productive but teach you nothing new. "What features would you want?" is a zombie question. It generates activity without learning
